Chrysoprase is Greek for “gold leek-green” — an apt description for the colour of this lush translucent gemstone. Chrysoprase was used in jewellery and royal seals from Babylon and Israel to Greece and Rome. Alexander the Great always sported one in his belt when going into battle.
After discoveries of the great Egyptian treasures, Chrysoprase became a staple of Victorian jewellery designs. The deep lustre and high polish, combined with its exuberant apple-green colour, ensures continuing high demand.
