Jewellery has always played a part in celebration. Even in prehistoric times, jewellery was used as a mark of status and esteem. The first wedding rings can be traced back to ancient Egypt, and have been used as a symbol of commitment and devotion across cultures ever since. But while we all know at least the basics of engagement ring and wedding ring etiquette and design, other celebratory jewellery can be more of a mystery. So, in this blog, we’re going to talk you through anniversary ring design.

What Do You Need to Know About Designing a Custom Anniversary Ring?

What is an anniversary ring?

As you can probably guess, anniversary rings are rings exchanged between partners to celebrate significant events. Most commonly, anniversary rings are presented on milestone wedding anniversaries, such as the 10th, 20th, or 25th.

Custom anniversary rings can be of any design. Some people choose to incorporate diamonds and other precious stones. Others prefer a simple band. But the more significant the milestone, the showier anniversary rings tend to be.

How to design an anniversary ring

Look at the jewellery your partner usually wears most frequently

Your bespoke anniversary ring can include almost any design concept. But to be a success it has to appeal to the wearer’s personal aesthetic. And the best way to find inspiration is to look at the jewellery they usually wear. So, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Aside from their wedding and engagement rings (which they can’t really change), what metal is their preference?
  • Do they opt for bolder or more understated styles?
  • Does vintage appeal, or are they more inclined towards modernity?
  • Do they have a favourite stone?

Consider using the stones related to your anniversary

Every anniversary carries an associated precious stone. From peridot for the first anniversary, to diamond for the 10th, and golden topaz for the 50th. If you want to create a ring that truly reflects the length of your relationship, including an anniversary stone is a wonderful idea.

Incorporate your family

Some couples like to acknowledge their growing family with their anniversary rings. Whether through ‘secret’ inserts on the inside of the band. Or as a primary feature. Including a stone for each child is a fantastic way to genuinely personalise your ring. If you don’t have children, create a trilogy ring with your and your partner’s birth stones either side of your anniversary stone. Or incorporate your interests and special dates into the band.

Create a budget

Nothing kills romance quite like an unexpected bill. So, before you begin designing any custom jewellery, create a budget. Work out what you want to spend. Decide what you must include. Then, make sure that you share this information with your designer before you get started. That way, you can create the perfect piece without overspending, and without disappointment.

Anniversary rings can be a wonderful way to mark the pivotal dates of your relationship. But while you understandably wish to get your design right, it’s good to know that there are no real rules for anniversary ring design. You don’t need to break the bank. You don’t need to break out the diamonds. In fact, you don’t need to do anything in particular at all. Just think of a design that will make your loved one smile, and follow your instincts. Our designers can take care of everything else!
