Twisted band engagement rings have become increasingly popular in recent years. Their main appeal is that they can make a relatively simple, low-cost ring look spectacular. And they really don’t need to be overly ‘showy’ to shine. So, what do you need to know about designing your own?

Twisted Band Engagement Rings – How to Get the Look

Twisted band engagement rings don’t begin and end with an interesting shape. There’s also a deeper symbolism. The style is meant to be an interpretation of the infinity symbol, representing endless love and commitment. And the lovely thing is that the pattern can be blended with virtually all of the more traditional ring forms: solitaire, cluster, halo, or even trilogy. And if you design your own, you can get exactly what you want.

Designing your band

While the centre stone will always be of prime importance in any engagement ring, with the twisted band design you’re adding finesse to an often-overlooked aspect. And how you make the most of that is entirely down to you. Some people stick with plain metal, simply yet beautifully formed. Others adorn parts of the twist with smaller or contrasting stones. While twists comprised of two, intertwining metals – perhaps rose gold and platinum – to represent each partner in the relationship, are growing in popularity. For a truly understated look – often selected for those who work with their hands, or for male wedding rings – you can even have a twisted band without a centre stone. It still looks beautiful and unique, but it’s a lot more practical to wear.

Selecting your stone

The stone you choose for any engagement ring will depend upon four criteria:

  1. Your partner’s preference. Do they have a favourite stone? A favourite colour?
  2. Your assets. Do you or your partner already have a special stone that you would like to repurpose? Perhaps something from a grandparent’s engagement ring or necklace.
  3. Your ring style. Some stones simply don’t work with certain designs. While you could have an enormous solitaire diamond on a hair-thin band, it would sit terribly and wouldn’t be overly comfortable to wear. It’s best to strike a balance.
  4. Your budget. Enough said.

Designing your ring

Twisted bands are commonly associated with a modern aesthetic. But when you’re designing your own engagement ring, there’s nothing to stop you blending the twist with a vintage design. It’s your ring. So, it’s your call. At Durham Rose, once you’ve talked through your ideas with us, we can help you find the right design for your needs. We usually work via a live video call – although you can come to the studio, if you prefer – and share a digital screen with you, so that you can see our interpretation of your design taking shape through CAD drawings. Once we’ve got a basic design that you’re happy with, we’ll add the finishing touches and create photo-real images for you to approve. If you’re happy with those, then we’ll get to work sourcing your stones and forming your band – that’s the really exciting part!

We love twisted band engagement rings at Durham Rose, because there’s so much scope for originality. From the simplest to the most outrageously extravagant design, the twist can lift the ordinary into something special.
