As much as you want to focus on excitement and romance, when selecting an engagement ring budget has to play a part. No one has unlimited funds. And no one wants to see debt every time they look at their loved one’s hand. And the same premise applies when designing a custom engagement ring. But working to a budget isn’t miserly or unromantic, it’s pure common sense. And shows that you care enough about your future together that you don’t want to begin married life in debt.

The important thing is that you find a ring that you and your intended completely love. But that doesn’t leave you strapped for cash. And we can help you to do that!

5 Tips for Working to Your Budget When Designing Your Custom Engagement Ring

Be open with your designer

Whether you have a clear idea of what you want your bespoke engagement ring to look like, or you’re starting out with a blank canvas, if you’re working with a custom jewellery designer, like Durham Rose, you need to be clear about your budget. It doesn’t matter if you have £850 to spend, or several thousand. Your designer is the best person to help you make the most of your money.

Get to know your diamonds

Diamonds are the classic choice for engagement rings. But they are also among the most expensive of the precious stones. However, not all diamonds were created equal. Some are considered ‘flawless’ – these are the diamonds completely free of blemishes of any kind. And these are the most expensive. But there are other diamonds that feature ‘inclusions’ – chips, clouding, needles, – that are there, but invisible to the naked eye. They’re just as beautiful, but they cost less due to the inherent flaw. And the more inclusions a stone has, the less you will pay for it. The colour and shape of the diamond will also influence the price. So, it’s worth weighing up all your options before becoming fixed on a specific idea.

Consider different stone types

As well as studying different diamond types, it’s worth thinking about using different stones. Diamonds may now be the go-to choice for engagement rings. But that’s only because of one of history’s most successful advertising campaigns. Before 1947, no stone was really off-limits for engagement rings. And selecting something other than a diamond for your custom engagement ring has the potential to make it really original and beautiful. You just need to look at the Duchess of Cambridge’s sapphire engagement ring to see the truth of that.

Choose your metal wisely

The band plays a large part in the final look of your engagement ring. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not open to compromise. If your budget is limitless, then sure, choose rhodium. The result will be breath-taking. But if you’re not an A-lister, then maybe consider white gold instead. There’s also platinum for the middle ground. Whatever aesthetic you’re looking for, there’s always more than one option to contemplate. And the finished result will be just as lovely.

Make a must-have and willing to compromise list

Designing a custom engagement ring is an act of love. You’re not just walking into a store and picking any old thing off the shelf. You are putting a bit of yourself into the design. And it’s that which makes it truly valuable. So, while you may want to throw the kitchen sink at it, it’s important to remember that it’s not all about money. So, before your first design consultation, it can be a good idea to jot down your thoughts. Think about what’s important to you in your design. Think about what your intended will love. And then, think about the bits that you’re willing to change. There might not be anything, and that’s fine. But our designers are experts in their field. And they’re also really creative. So, if your budget doesn’t quite stretch to your design, they could well have a creative solution to help you compromise. But knowing your absolute no-go areas can help them to do that more effectively.

Designing a custom engagement ring should be an enjoyable experience. But worrying about your budget can really take the shine off it. So, be sensible. Plan ahead. Seek advice. And think about what really matters to you. Because whatever you end up spending, we can guarantee that your other half with love it.
